EL NUEVO DIARIO, NUEVA YORK.- El legendario locutor de radio puertoriqueño Polito Vega falleció este jueves a la edad de 84 años.

No podemos no podemos expresar lo mucho que lo entrañaremos pero estamos agradecidos del tiempo que tuvimos para compartir con el y legado que deja al mundo de la radio. Polito Vega nació en Ponce un 3 de agosto de 1938 y se crió en La Playa de Ponce antes de llegar a Nueva York en 1959.
La radio fue su única profesión. Laboró como comentarista y se vio obligado a trabajar en el turno de noche cuando estaba aprendiendo a comunicarse con la gente a través del micrófono desde una cabina de radio aislada. También trabajó para la televisión Telemundo durante tres años, presentando el programa Club de la Juventud. Luego volvió a la radio, destaca una nota de prensa.

Su primer programa fue Fiesta Time en 1960 en la estación de radio WEVD-AM. «En ese momento tenía miedo de hablar frente a un micrófono, pero empecé a obtener la aprobación de la gerencia y, lo que es más importante, ser aceptado por el público», dijo Polito Vega, mientras sonreía y posaba para algunas fotos. «Estoy cansado de que me entrevisten y no quiero posar para más fotos».
A principios de la década de 1960, las estaciones de radio solo tocaban música de guitarra y algunos tríos y boleros. Músicos como Machito, Felipe Rodríguez, Tito Rodríguez y Tito Puente estaban cerca, pero ningún DJ tocaba su música. Fue Polito Vega quien tocó el primer sencillo de salsa, que le fue traído por Jerry Masucci, fundador de Fania Records. El disco de 45 rpm fue hecho por Johnny Pacheco y se tituló «El Campeon». Luego vino Che Che Cole de Willie Colon y fue entonces cuando la salsa realmente comenzó en la Gran Manzana. Polito Vega estuvo allí todo el tiempo respaldando la música.

Hace unos años se le preguntó sobre la jubilación , cosa que para ese entonces no tenía en sus planes pero que con calma lo haría a corto plazo. Dijo que lo está pasando bien y que todavía está lleno de energía. «Tal vez me jubile dentro de cinco años, pero no estoy seguro de que suceda tan pronto».
