La famosa cantante cubana Celia Cruz, de cuya muerte se cumplieron 20 años el pasado 16 de julio, y su popular exclamación “¡Azúcar!” aparecen en una moneda de 25 centavos de dólar cuyo diseño se acaba de dar a conocer, aunque no entrará en circulación hasta 2024.
La US Mint, la Casa de la Moneda de Estados Unidos, dedicó a la ‘Guarachera de Cuba’ uno de los ‘quarters’ (cuarto de dólar) de una serie llamada ‘American Women Quarters’, que comenzó a emitir en 2022 y va a continuar hasta 2025 con el fin de honrar los avances y contribuciones de las mujeres a este país.
El programa establece que cada año salgan cinco de estas nuevas monedas y en 2024, además de la de Celia Cruz, entrarán en circulación las de la reverenda episcopaliana Pauli Murray, la de Patsy Takemoto Mink, primera mujer de color en ser congresista, la cirujana y defensora de los derechos de la mujer Mary Edwatds Walker y la activista política y educadora Zitkala Sa.
La Casa de la Moneda define a Celia Cruz al presentar la moneda como “una cantante cubano-estadounidense, icono cultural y una de las más populares artistas latinas del siglo XX”.
El anverso de su moneda representa un retrato de George Washington, originalmente compuesto y esculpido por Laura Gardin Fraser para conmemorar su 200 aniversario.
El reverso muestra a Celia Cruz mostrando su deslumbrante sonrisa en una actuación vestida con uno de sus atuendos característicos y una inscripción a su derecha:”!Azúcar!”, su grito para poner a la gente a bailar.
La cantante, que se exilió en EE.UU. en 1961 y nunca regresó a Cuba, ha sido objeto de varios homenajes con motivo del 20 aniversario de su muerte a causa de un cáncer.
